Every now and then, longtime Concord residents appear at the Concord Monitor offices with envelopes in their hands. Inside: a cache of brittle old photographs. Sometimes they want our readers’ help figuring out when and where the pictures were taken. Ofen they know the history of the pictures – and hope to share it with the community. This is among the best parts of living and working in a city with such a long and well-preserved history.
This book, Concord Memories: The Early Years, is a grand version of those serendipitous encounters. A joint project of the Monitor, the Concord Public Library, Concord Historical Society and New Hampshire Historical Society, we have collected some remarkable images of Concord from the library and historical societies’ collections. Some come from local residents who answered our call for old pictures in the autumn of 2012. Many have not been easily accessible to the public before now.
Taken together, the photographs in Concord Memories present a terrific view of old Concord. It is familiar and foreign all at once. A trolley on Main Street? Downtown jammed with horses? Junior-high basketball players in argyle socks and knickers? A city government in which women played no role? Apparently so.
